Part 3 of 9
Highlights: chapter 13 of an intro physics text for life-science students introducing the basic concepts of electric field and potential
Abstract: In this chapter, we carefully introduce the challenging but critical concepts of electric field and electric potential, building conceptual as well as mathematical understanding. We treat capacitance carefully since it is a topic essential for understanding electrical energy balances in cells, especially neural models. At the end of the chapter, we introduce the important phenomenon of entropic forces, discussing how thermal effects can balance electric forces in ionic fluids as in the examples of charge shielding and the Nernst potential.
