Part 11 of 12
Highlights: chapter 10 of an intro physics text for life-science students discussing chemical energetics from a physics point of view with simple models
Abstract: Traditional introductory physics texts focus on macroscopic phenomena. But atoms and molecules play a large role in the thinking of IPLS students. In this text, we have already introduced some of the implications of atomic models of matter. In this chapter, we discuss the Lennard-Jones interatomic potential model, consider the energetics of molecular binding, and look at chemical reactions in simple models. This can help students make better sense of what’s happening in chemical reactions. It also helps answer the question many students find confusing, “Where does the energy in an exothermic reaction come from?”
