Part 7 of 9
Highlights: chapter 17 of an intro physics text for life-science students introducing three models of light and describing the ray model in detail
Abstract: This chapter begins with an overview of three models of light: rays, waves, and photons. It then presents the ray model in detail. We begin by creating principles based on everyday experience. We then relate the ray model to a Newtonian model of particle motion, giving detailed examples of how to apply it. We present the basic equations of the ray model as one pair of equations (describing the position and size of an image) that works for all situations — flat and curved mirrors, converging and diverging lenses, and real and virtual images.
