Highlights: Design and build two different designs of model microscope, and relate focal length to magnification
Abstract: This lab is designed to help students explore and understand several things about how microscopes are designed: what kind of image is produced, how it is detected, and how magnification (marked on all microscope objectives) is determined by the design and placement of the objective lens. Students design and build two different model microscopes, one that produces a real image that can be recorded by an electronic sensor, and one that must be viewed by a user looking through the eyepiece lens. They also design and build a model that imitates changing the objective lens on a microscope equipped with multiple interchangeable lenses.
