Highlights: A Tutorial-style instructional worksheet and demo video on Reynolds Number and the biology and physics of moving in viscous fluids.
Abstract: Biological processes take place on a wide range of scales and the physical character of the fluidic environment, as measured by Reynolds Number (Re), plays a crucial rule in shaping these processes. This worksheet is designed to help students appreciate the molecular origin of the inertial and viscous drag forces, the fact that fluids can change physical character at different scales as measured by Re, and the kinds of motion that can take place at different scales. This worksheet includes a video demo and a HW page on the related Critical Transition Force. It is intended to be completed by groups of 3-4 students in an IPLS class.
