Part 9 of 9

Highlights: chapter 19 of an intro physics text for life-science students introducing the photon model of light and including many useful applications
Abstract: This chapter introduces light as photons, a mental blend of the particle and waves pictures. It describes briefly the history of the exploration of how light is generated and absorbed by matter. We describe the failure of the wave model and the proposals of Planck and Einstein, with a discussion of black-body radiation and the photoelectric effect. After presenting the basic rules of the photon model, we discuss the wide variety of powerful applications of photon technology and their uses in biology, medicine, and everyday life. The chapter closes with 2 short sections on color and color vision.
